Thank you Greece for the Marathon Greek: Μαραθώνας
The Marathon is named in honor of the Battle of Marathon, which took place in 490 BC in the city of Marathon. The outnumbered Greeks defeated the Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. The messenger Pheidippides sprinted from Marathon to Athens, approximately 25 miles, exclaiming “νενικήκαμεν” meaning “we have won!” before collapsing and dying.
